Our Story

Story Behind Balini Organic

Tya and Evelyn met by working together with the cacao community. From the beginning they felt a connection that should last across continents – Tya living in Bali, Evelyn in Germany. During Covid-19-crisis they had a video call, feeling the urge to support the local cacao farmers, since the crisis struck them hard economically.

That was when the idea of BALINI Organic was born.

Since then they are united by the same motivation and passion: to build a business supporting smallholder farmers and taking social and ecological responsibility towards humans and nature by doing so.

Company Drive

BALINI Organic is a small and women-led business that pursues the overarching vision that the economy should serve the people. The idea behind is to use economic means primarily to increase social benefits. BALINI Organic’s approach is not only to create new market opportunities for the smallholder farmers to sell their certified cocoa, coconut and vanilla products, but also to give them an option to participate in value-added stages of the supply chain (diversifying the products, sorting, exporting, etc.) as well as to enhance their socio-economic independence and competitiveness in the long term by means of knowledge transfer and to exchange to build a business hand in hand.

BALINI Organic strives to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #1 No Poverty, l# 5 Gender Equality and #12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

The Core

We, as BALINI Organic, highly value our close collaboration with the cacao farmers. They welcomed us, they shared their home and local knowledge with us. It has changed our perspective as well as increased our appreciation for the work they do every day and their natural products as well as the importance of a sustainable value chain.

We would like to give something back with BALINI Organic and to pursue a mission with our company that serves the community, the customers as well as the environment.

As two female founders, we will promote women empowerment and activities to strengthen socio-economic independence of female farmers especially, by explicitly involving them in business activities. Learn more about that in the section “Empowered women empower others”. We have a strong circle of partner organisations, which share the same vision with

BALINI Organic. Together we support the farming community to advocate their needs and promote entrepreneurship, respect and integrity as fundamental values as well as to foster good agricultural practices, climate adaptation and gender equality.

Empowered women empower others

For us, women empowerment means offering women and girls worldwide equal opportunities, education and respect. It is about supporting women in the social as well as economic sphere and strengthening their self-confidence. At the same time, empowerment of women means overcoming hurdles and dissolving gender roles that stand in the way of many women making decisions for themselves and to mobilise resources according to their needs.

As female founders, we would like to create opportunities for other women to move forward by means of uniting.

We do believe that women leadership is not only beneficial for the individual alone but for the whole community. Since women are often actors of social change – challenging traditional and manifested gendered perspectives within communities.

But as the female farmer Ibu Nariani underlines, talking about gender equality it is crucial to involve both women and men

BALINI Organic is investing 5% of its revenues to the program of “Women Empowerment and Gender Equality” in collaboration Kalimajari Foundation.

Our partners

We are working closely with the local farmers’ cooperative KSS, based in Bali, from where we source our raw cacao, coconut and vanilla products. Since 2011, KSS holds the certification of its products from Rainforest Alliance (formerly UTZ certified). Tya has been working with the cooperative for a long time already. We know the staff, we know the production site. Furthermore, we work hand-in-hand with the local NGO Kalimajari to promote women empowerment and youth engagement goals through training and advocacy. We believe that this collaboration will strengthen and wider the impact that we would like to achieve on the grassroots level. We cooperate with UBUD RAW – Chocolate & Cacao, Bali, in the development and production of our energy bars. Any other partners, we choose with care and we make sure the same vision is shared.
